Christ as the Firstborn and the Colossian Heresy | July 8th, 2007
We recently posted an article on Colossians 1:15-18, which focused on Christ as the firstborn and his role in bringing about the rest of creation. One point that the article did not discussion that perhaps it should have (and likely will at a later date through a revision) was how Paul’s writings refuted the Colossian heresy.

It is generally accepted (with a few exceptions, such as Morna Hooker) that Paul was refuting some type of heresy in his letter to the Colossians. The exact nature of that heresy and its identification has been a matter of some question, with no clear consensus available. In fact, House observes: “One writer says 44 opinions on the identity of these opponents have been held by 19th- and 20th-century scholars.” [H. Wayne House, “Doctrinal Issues in Colossians – Part 1: Heresies in the Colossian Church,” Bibliotheca Sacra (electronic edition). (Dallas, TX: Dallas Theological Seminary, 1998), 45.]

It is impossible to be completely certain of the exact nature of the Colossian heresy. However, as Bruce notes, the only basis we have for determining the nature of the heresy is what Paul provides in refutation of it:
Some scholars suggest that Paul's polemic was not always well informed, that he was prone to misunderstand the positions he attacked. The implication is that those modern scholars who charge him with misunderstanding are better informed than he was about this or that position which he attacks, whether it be the Corinthian disbelief in future resurrection or the Galatian reliance on works of a certain kind as the ground of their justification. On this it can simply be said that even those scholars are dependent on what Paul says about the controverted positions. So if he was misinformed, no more trustworthy source of information is available. [F.F. Bruce, “Colossian Problems Part 3: The Colossian Heresy,” Bibliotheca Sacra (July-September 1984), 196.]

A Bit of Encouragement | June 26th, 2007
Last night in my Bible reading Psalm 30 struck me as particularly encouraging, and so while you will have read your Bible before you have come across it, I felt it worth posting anyway. Hopefully it will bring you some encouragement as well.
I will exalt You, O Jehovah; for You have lifted me up and have not allowed my foes to rejoice over me. O Jehovah my God, I cried to You, and You have healed me. O Jehovah, You have brought up my soul from Sheol; You have kept me alive, from going down into the Pit. Sing praises to Jehovah, O saints of His; and give thanks to the memory of His holiness. For His anger is only a moment; in His favor is life. Weeping may endure in the evening, but joy comes in the morning. And in my prosperity, I said, I shall never be moved forever. O Jehovah, in Your favor You have made my strong mountain to stand; You hid Your face; I was troubled; I called to You, O Jehovah; yea, I prayed to Jehovah. What profit is in my blood, in going down to the Pit? Shall the dust praise You? Shall it tell of Your truth? Hear, O Jehovah, and favor me; O Jehovah, be my helper. You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have loosed my sackcloth and have clothed me with gladness. So my glory shall praise You, and not be quiet; O Jehovah, my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

A Redesign... With You in Mind | May 10th, 2007
A quick glance reveals that the front page of this website has been slightly redesigned. The purpose is to better categorize some of the content, while allowing for the addition of other types of content. One addition is this section, which is a type of blog. Additionally, you will note that below this blog is a section called Responding to Error, which is essentially a secondary website built off of this one. The purpose of it is to provide responses to articles that are propagating error and/or attacking the truth. The section has been online for a while, though it has not been linked from the main page. Currently it hosts a response to material written by Dr. John Ankerberg where he misapplies the “I am he” statements of God and Jesus. To read it, please see the link below.

This blog is given the name Defending Truth because that is its primary purpose. This section will be to provided brief comments on current events that revolve around Biblical issues, including brief comments that address those critical of what is true at times when it is not appropriate to have an extended discussion as is featured under Responding to Error. Other issues may come up from time-to-time as the need arises.

There should be some other minor improvements coming soon to this website as well. For example, some articles discuss a number of key texts that are not necessarily featured in the article’s title. One improvement in the works is to include references to the principle texts covered by each article in both the title bar (your Internet browser’s title bar is up at the very top of the screen) and in the article descriptions that are found on the category pages. This should make it easier to locate information on specific texts that might be relevant to your research and/or ministry.

If you have any suggestions for this site or if there is any content that you would like to see, suggestions are always welcomed. You can send them to contact at scripturaltruths.com
